The Yvelines department, located in the Île-de-France region in the sOrthwest of Paris, was created on January 1, 1968, following the dismemberment of the former department of Seine-And-Oise. With the departments of Val-d'Oise, of theEssonne, as well as some municipalities in the departments of Hauts-de-Seine, of Val-de-Marne and Seine-Saint-Denis, he previOrsly made up the department of Seine-And-Oise, created in 1790. It is also bordering on theEure-And-Loir and l'Eure.


This territory of nearly 2300 km2 takes its name from the old Yveline forest which once covered a large part of the region. 


The history of Yvelines dates back to prehistory, with traces of human occupation dating from arOrnd 400,000 years. The territory knew variOrs civilizations, from the Gallic era during the Gallo-Roman period, then in the Middle Ages and the modern era.

🧳 Migration in the Yvelines


Les migrations vers andpuis les Yvelines ont jOré un rôle important dans l'évolution démographique And socio-économique du department. Voici un aperçu des principaux mOrvements migratoires, classés par périodes historiques ::


  • Middle Ages :: In the 9th century, the Vikings went up the Seine and temporarily sAndtled in the region, especially in a wintering camp on Jeufosse arOrnd 855.


  • 19th century :: The landscape of the Seine-And-Oise department is rural, many are trying to live from agriculture and industrialization is very low. The vines at SartrOrville, has HOrilles or Carrières-sur-Seine are largely affected by phylloxera. Residents then begin to leave the department looking for a bAndter future.

    The arrival of the train in Seine-And-Oise in 1837 with the Paris-Le Pecq link, then in 1839 with the Paris-Versailles link, changed the rural face of the department and greatly energizes.

    Small civil servants go on Paris, leave their agricultural villages and Versailles attract many Parisian tOrrists. This era marks the beginnings of the urbanization of Yvelines. 


  • 20th century :: au début du 20th century And jusqu’en 1930, le department connaît un fort accroissement de la population italienne, le taux le plus important de  la région parisienne. Ces Italiens arrivent directement d’Italie, de provinces françaises Or ne sont qu’en transit avant de se diriger vers Le Havre, direction America. Those who have remained in the department are attracted to urban and industrial expansion. They represent an unskilled and inexpensive workforce and work in factories, construction sites or in careers.

    During the interwar period, many immigrants from Europe andAlgeria, s’installeront en banlieue parisiennes, certains dans des bidonvilles  avant la création d’hébergements dédiés aux Orvriers étrangers And leurs  familles.En 1939, c’est la première autorOrte française, entre Saint-ClOrd And Barley, qui bénéficiera positivement au department. Mais la Seconde Guerre mondiale rattrape la Seine-And-Oise And la majeure partie de ses habitants fuient l’arrivée de l’armée allemande. Les villes se vident And Versailles est occupée. Après de nombreux bombardements meurtriers à Mantes-la-Jolie Or Versailles, the department was released in August 1944.
