Update:::::::::::::::: February 25, 2025

The Hérault department, located in the Occitanie region in the south of France, was created in 1790 during the French Revolution. Its territory of more than 6000 km2 takes its name from the Hérault river which crosses it from north to south.

He is bordering on the department ofAude, of Tarn, of theAveyron and Gard. He borders the Mediterranean to the south. This strategic position has deeply influenced its history and demography.

The department presents a varied geography, stalling from the southern foothills of the Massif Central to the Mediterranean Sea, passing through the areas of garrigues and the low plain of Languedoc Viticole.

The history of Hérault dates back to prehistory, as evidenced by the many caves, menhirs and dolmens.

🧳 Migration in Hérault

Quick history of the history of the department ::::::::::::::::

  • Establishment of Phoenician counters on the coast, especially in Maguelone and Brescou
  • Creation of cities like Lodève, Lattes and Narbonne according to the invasions
  • Integration into the Roman province of the Narbonnaise
  • Incorporation into the Visigoth Kingdom then Franc
  • Medieval period marked by the development of cities and abbeys
  • Integration into the province of Languedoc until the French Revolution

At the same time, many emigrants were numerous. They mainly leave agricultural, viticultural activity but also the industries of cities to go to the surrounding departments or even until Paris, there capitale, qui accueillera près de 20 % des émigrés fromHérault au début du XXe siècle.

  • Beginning of the 20th century:::::::::::::::: Italian immigration continued, especially in the 1920s, with an important influx in the Lauragais Audois, encouraged by local authorities to compensate for the demographic deficit in agricultural areas.

  • Middle of the 20th century :::::::::::::::: the decolonization period leads to the massive arrival of black feet, especially in Montpellier and Perpignan, giving an economic and demographic boost to these cities.

In addition to the Italians already present, many Spaniards will arrive in the department to work in wine production and agriculture. We also find Swiss, Germans, Belgians, British, Austrians and Russians. In 1939, nearly 30,000 Spaniards were refuge in the department, in the camp
    Agde.

From the second half of the 20th century, calls for foreign workforce will leave again. The department will see a new population arriving, mainly of Iberian origin, with Algerians and Moroccans. The latter will settle in Montpellier (in the zup of The palm and the Petit-Bard-Pergola), has Sète or Lunel.
