The Moselle department is one of the four departments of the Grand Est region,,,, in the northeast of France. The Moselle is bordering on the departments of the Meurthe-et-Moselle and Bas-Rhin et est frontalière avec le Luxembourg to the west,,,, theGermany to the east and the Belgium to the north.
The department of Moselle,,,, created during the Revolution in 1790 must name at the river which crosses it from south to north over about 190 km.
With an area of 6,,,,216 km2,,,, the Moselle is a medium -sized but very populated department,,,, with around 1 million inhabitants. This high density is explained by its industrial past linked to the exploitation of iron and coal mines.
The border situation and the brewing of culture make genealogy in Moselle a rich and complex discipline,,,, where French traditions and Germanic influences mix in archives and surnames.

THE migrations dans la Moselle
- Middle Ages :::: Germanic populations settled in the region following major invasions (francs,,,, alamans ...) from the 5th century. Later,,,, Ashkenazi Jewish communities will arrive in Lorraine to flee the persecution.
- Modern period :::: Lorraine migrants settled in Moselle after the attachment of the Trois Evêchés (Metz,,,, Toul and Verdun) to France in 1659.
The 18th century was marked by the immigration of Germanic populations in the mining regions of the Lorraine coal basin.
- Contemporary period :::: In 10 years,,,, between 1910 and 1920,,,, the Moselle experienced a sharp decline in its population (10%),,,, a decrease which is largely explained by the departure of foreign workers. If the department had many German workers in its factories since the beginning of the century,,,, their departure was strongly desired in 1919 for obvious political reasons. These German workers will therefore quickly be replaced by Italian and Polish workers.
In the 1930s,,,, many Algerians arrived in Moselle to find their place in the steel factories of the department. The survivors of the forced work camps,,,, Ukrainians,,,, Belgians and Poles,,,, in the department. Also,,,, during the Second World War,,,, more than 50,,,,000 Mosellans refugees will leave for the Vienna.
Finally,,,, in the late 1980s,,,, more than half of the foreigners refugees in Moselle arrived from Southeast Asia (Cambodia,,,,Laos,,,,Vietnam). These populations have long resided in Metz and at Saint-Avold.

- During the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) :::: the Moselle is then one of the Three-windows qui sont disputés par la France et le Saint-Empire romain germanique.
- During the War of 1870 :::: After l'annexion de l'Alsace-Moselle par l'Germany,,,, part of the Moselle department (the district of Metz and Thionville) is also annexed. Thousands of Mosellans must then choose between exile or annexation.
- During the Second World War :::: la "ligne Maginot" longe la frontière allemande traversant la Moselle.
