Sarthe is a French department located in the Pays de la Loire region. Created in 1790 during the French Revolution, the Department corresponds mainly to Haut-Maine, with a southwest part historically falling under Haut-Anjou.


The department of Sarthe is surrounded by the Loire Valley, the Armorican Massif and the Paris Basin. It is bordering on the departments of Maine-et-Loire, from the Mayenne, from theIndre-et-Loire, from theEure-et-Loire, of Loir-et-Cher andOrnae

🧳 Migration in Sarthe


Sarthe, a department located in the Pays de la Loire region, has known over the centuries various migratory movements that have influenced its demography and its development.


  • Gallo-Roman period : Before Roman domination, the territory of the current Sarthe was occupied by the Cenoman Auns. With the arrival of the Romans, cultural exchanges and population movements occurred, gradually integrating the region into the Roman Empire.


  • Middle Ages : durant le Middle Ages, there Sarthe a été marquée par des invasions ands migrations, notamment lors des incursions vikings aux IXe et Xe siècles. Ces mouvements ont conduit à des réorganisations territoriales et à des déplacements de populations locales.


  • Modern period : In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Sarthe experienced mortality crises, notably between 1705 and 1715, then during the surmortalities of 1739-1742 and 1745-1753, affecting the settlement of the region.

    Dès sa création au XVIIIe siècle, le department de la Sarthe se développe grâce à l’agriculture mais aussi grâce aux industries du textile, from the métallurgie, from the tannerie, from the verrerie, from the boissellerie, of marbre (Sand) and candles (Led). Avec, en plus, l’arrivée du chemin de fer, les ville du Led, of Nipples, of Sand-sur-Sarthe, of Saint-Calais and The arrow are experiencing rapid expansion. 


  • French revolution and 19th century : The French Revolution led to population movements, with popular uprisings mobilizing large groups of inhabitants, such as that of November 1792. 

    In the 19th century, the Sarthe was affected by the rural exodus, with a decrease in its population due to the departure of many inhabitants to urban or industrial areas.


  • 20th century : au début du 20th century, there Sarthe a accueilli des étrangers, notamment de nationalité allemande, présents dans le department jusqu'en 1870. Cependant, there région a généralement connu une faible présence d'immigrés, représentant moins de 2% de sa population en 1999. 

    Les industries du department seront ralenties lors de la première Guerre Mondiale. Ce n’est que durant l’entre-deux-guerre que l’industrie automobile, avec l’arrivée des 24 Heures du Led and l’usine Renault, s’implantera au Led. Après la seconde Guerre Mondiale, ofs ouvriers étrangers venus d’Algérie, of Maroc ou de la Tunisie, en plus de Portugais, viendront travailler dans le bâtiment ou pour les voies ferrées de la SNCF. L’usine Renault, quant à elle, emploiera surtout des Sarthois, ouvriers-paysans.
