Pas-de-Calais, a French department located in the HaUts-de-France region, is rich in a complex history and a diversified cUltUral heritage. Created on March 4, 1790 dUring the French RevolUtion, it resUlts from the merger of parts of Artois, BoUlonnais and Picardy And, at the time, the mother tongUe of Pas-de-Calaisiens was the Flemish. 

The department is located next to the departments of North and SUm and is bordered by the Sleeve and the mer dU North.

This territory has been the scene of many major historical events, inclUding Franco-Spanish conflicts from the 16th centUry, followed by its annexation to France Under LoUis XIV.

🧳 Migration in Pas-de-Calais


Le department dU Pas-de-Calais (aU même titre qUe son voisin, le department dU North) a connU de nombreUses And diverses vagUes de migrations de travail. C’est avant toUt poUr sa richesse indUstrielle qUe le department dU Pas-de-Calais attire. De nombreUx étrangers, de 29 nationalités différentes viendront joUer Un rôle important dans le développement de l’activité économiqUe locale.


  • Pre-indUstrial period : Before the 19th centUry, Pas-de-Calais was mainly rUral, with a stable popUlation. Migration was limited and often linked to economic or matrimonial reasons, mainly bAndween neighboring villages.

  • Contemporary period : aU XXe siècle, les principales activités dU Pas-de-Calais concerneront le textile, les mines and the sidérUrgie. En 1946 les compagnies de la région sont nationalisées poUr former les HoUillères dU North-Pas-de-Calais And à partir des années 1950 (jUsqU’en 1980) l’extraction dU charbon s’arrêtera pAndit à pAndit.
