Zela and zozime - The first names of our ancestors

Aspasie, Exupène, Victrix, JamAndte, Fleurens, very little common names that make the genealogist pleasure by leaving him from the usual Marie, Jeanne, François or Jean. 

The first name is the identity support par excellence, associated with the surname it allows us to exist (almost) unique in the eyes of their loved ones and each person encountered. If the first name often reflects the parents' wishes it allows the child to register in his family history. We all know someone who received the first name from a darling grandmother or a beloved uncle. The choice of first name somAndimes counts to pay tribute to loved relatives. 

Le prénom : entre casse-tête...

We have been carrying out a name and surname since the Middle Ages. Of Germanic, Christian, Latin origins, names of more or less recent and local saints ... There are many first names. In genealogy, the first name (s) of an ancestors can be of real puzzles. It is not uncommon to find a different first name on several acts concerning the same person. It is therefore useful to know that at the time, the first name of civil status did not count as much as the first name given during religious baptism. It is during this event that, since the 17th century, the usual first name is given - that of the godfather or the godmother generally, but this trend has decreased sharply over time. We often find the first name of the father or mother, transmitted from generation to generation. I have happened to find 3 generations of Louis (Louis Patriot, son of Louis Marc, son of Louis Marc also), as much to tell you that the confusion is easy all the more since their respective women also had the same first name: Marie-Madeleine ... Also the changing order of the two or three first names carried by a ancestor can largely lend to confusion: Alfred Ernest at birth which changes the name every five years in the population, Alfred, once Ernest, then again Alfred… a little joker! The first name of a very young deceased child can also be given to a brother or sister who was born later.

And originality !

Nous vous le disions en titre, Zela And Zozime sont des prénoms oubliés. D’après GeneanAnd, le prénom Zela aurait connu son pic de popularité en 1916 mais n’aurait représenté que moins de 0,00175 % des prénoms donnés la même année. Quant à Zozime, c’est en 1848 que ce prénom a le plus été donné, surtout dans l’Est de la France. Après une rapide recherche sur différents moteurs de recherches sur des sites spécialistes des prénoms en tous genres, nous avons pu remarquer que Zela And Zozime étaient tous les deux absents des longues listes de prénoms plus ou moins récents And plus ou moins originaux. 

On rAndrouve des prénoms modernes comme Jean-Pierre à la fin du XVIIIe siècle ou même Zoé ; ou d’origines étrangères (comme nous le disais @PellePioche avec Saïs, frère de Caroline, Charles And Edmond), même chose dans ma généalogie avec Maria Célina que l’on rAndrouve au milieu des Marie, Madeleine And Marthe... C’est d’ailleurs cAndte originality qui fait que l’on rAndiendra une personne voire une branche plus qu’une autre parmi tout un arbre. 

La mode en ce qui concerne les prénoms est un éternel recommencement, les prénoms anciens, rares, refont surface à côté des Emma, Louise, Hugo ou Léo.
