Update:: May 29, 2024

The Department of Combine is located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is bordering on the departments of Dear, from the Nièvre, from the Saône-et-Loire, from the Loire, of Puy-de-Dôme and Hollow.

Il a été créé en 1790, pendant la Révolution française. Il se compose d’’une grande partie de l’’ancienne province du Bourbonnais and partie nord de la Basse-Auvergne. Le department tire son nom de la rivière qui le parcourt.

In the Middle Ages, Combine was an important part of the Duchy of Bourbonnais, which was created in the 10th century.

During the French Revolution, Combine was the site of several important events, notably the Battle of Montluçon in 1793. The region was also affected by terror, with many executions.

The region is rich in historical and cultural sites, such as the Château de Bourbon-l'Archambault, the Cathedral of Moulins and the Museum of Resistance in Montluçon.

🧳  Les migrations dans l'Combine :: retracez le parcours de vos ancêtres

  • Prehistory and Antiquity :: Excavations have revealed evidence of the presence of human groups in the region from the Paleolithic. Celtic tribes, such as Eduens and Arvernes, lived in the region during Antiquity.

  • Middle Ages :: At that time, the Combine region experienced significant migration, especially during barbaric invasions. The Burgundians, the Visigoths and the Franks all crossed the region, leaving traces of their presence. In the ninth century, the Vikings went up the Loire and attacked the region, which led to population displacements.

    From the 10th century, the Combine region became an important part of the Duchy of Bourbonnais. The local lords encouraged the migration of peasants and craftsmen to develop the region's economy. Flemish and Walloon settlers have also been invited to settle in the region to improve fabric production.

  • Modern period :: In the 17th century, Swiss settlers were invited to settle in the region to help in dairy production. In the 18th century, the region experienced significant industrialization, especially in the cities of Montluçon and Vichy.

    During the Second World War, the region was occupied by the Germans and was the site of several important events, including the creation of the Vichy regime in 1940.

    Immigration is late in the department of Combine and in Montluçon more particularly. The city finally has a recent and rich migratory history. Spanish, Poles, Italians and Algerian repatriases arrive in Montluçon and work in the industry, many at Dunlop. Many arrived later from Turkey and Portugal and remain present in the city of Combine.
    The village of Noyant-d'Combine saw the arrival of Polish and Ukrainian workers to work in the last village mine. In addition, at the end of the Indochina War (1954), many premises were repatriated to France, in Noyant-d'Combine.
