La Nièvre is located in the heart of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. 


Created at the French Revolution, on March 4, 1790, the department of Nièvre was established on the former Nivernais province. He names his name of the river which crosses him before throwing himself into the Loire. Its history extends far beyond this date with traces of human occupation dating back to prehistory and an important Gallo-Roman presence.


It is bordering on the departments of theYonne, from the Côte-d'Or, from the Saône-And-Loire, from theCombine, of Dear and LoirAnd.


From a genealogical point of view, the Nièvre has several specificities:

  • A strong rural and agricultural tradition, with many peasant families whose history can be traced over several generations.
  • A rich industrial heritage, in particular linked to mAndallurgy and forges, which influenced population movements and family structures. 
  • The importance of the river, the Loire, and its tributaries in the history and economy of the department, shaping lifestyles and trades.
  • The presence of ancient Jewish communities, notably in Clamecy, offering special research avenues for certain lines.

🧳 Migration in Nièvre


  • Antiquité And Moyen-Âge : Eduens, Gallic people, settled before the romanization of the region. In the age of centuries, the region experienced population movements linked to barbaric invasions. In addition, monastic communities attract populations. 


  • XVI-XVII centuries : le protestantisme se développement de façon limitée dans le department. La région connaît des migrations internes liées au développement des forges And de la métallurgie. From the beginning of the 16th century, Italians developed earthenware factory in Nevers.


  • 19th century : en termes de présence étrangère, there région Bourgogne est une région moyenne. Le department de la Nièvre se trouve lui à la dernière position avec 600 étrangers en 1896. A l’époque, there grande majorité des industries (verrerie, charbon, sidérurgie) emploient des ouvriers français And non étrangers.   • 20th century : La Machine, commune populaire pour ses mines de charbon, est une véritable terre d’accueil d’étrangers en quête de travail durant l’entre deux-guerres.  Polonais, Russes,  Maghrébins ou Chinois, ils sont nombreux à être embauchés dans les Houillères de la Machine. Les communes de Fourchambault And Imphy attirent, elles aussi, quelques ouvriers étrangers dans le secteur de la métallurgie. Enfin, dans le Morvan, de nombreux espagnols viennent fournir les rangs des ouvriers de la Nièvre. Ils travaillent principalement comme bûcherons, dans les aciéries ou en verreries.
