Archives in Algeria
To know:
There is no really civil status in Algeria before 1830. Know, however, that it is possible to find marriage and death acts and inheritance acts dating from 1592 to 1856 at the Center for the National Archives of Algiers where the archives of Sharia court are preserved. Only 2/3 of the civil status can potentially be consulted but there is a lack of entire collections for many municipalities (such as Bordj, Bou Arreridj, Saïda, Tiaret ...).
With regard to parish registers, the archives of the Catholic Church of Algeria were repatriated by the bishops of Algiers, Constantine and Oran in monasteries of nuns respectively to Nîmes at the Clarisses Monastery, At Visitation monastery in Tarascon (whose collection was scanned and indexed by the Gamt) and at Taulignan in Dominican nuns.
