Quebec, European immigration land

Throughout its history, Quebec has been a majority, mainly European, and especially French immigration.

Jacques Cartier est connu comme le premier homme a avoir découvert le Canada et le Québec en 1534,  et le suivirent, en 1617, les premiers colons français, Louis Hébert et Marie Rollet, dans ce qui s’appelait alors « Nouvelle-France ». Leur héritage est encore perceptible aujourd’hui, ils sont ainsi l’une des familles avec le plus grand nombre de descendants sur le territoire.  Malgré le passage à l’Empire Britannique en 1763, la population restera à 95 % d’origine française, et les 17 et 18 es siècles connaîtront une forte immigration en provenance de métropole. Ainsi, de 1791 à 1871  le nombre de Canadiens français passe de 140 000  à plus d’un million. Mais le 19 e siècle marque aussi une période de diversification dans la population liée notamment à l’arrivée de loyalistes restés fidèles à la couronne britannique, ayant quitté les États-Unis à la suite de la Guerre d’indépendance,

Many Irish people settle in this same period, so they represented in 1860 23 % of the Quebec population. Diversification also with the arrival of Germans and Polish. 

A period of strong emigration before a varied immigration wave

But if immigration has always been strong in Quebec, the province also experienced periods of emigration at the beginning of the 20th century to the United States. It is estimated that during this period of 5 to 10 % of its population joined the American neighbor each year. Even today, immigration remains a fundamental subject and at the heart of Quebec politics, thanks in particular to the 1960 "quiet revolution" which enabled the province to be able to control immigration on its territory. They particularly seek to attract French citizens, with success, these representing the first nationality in terms of number of arrivals in 2015. We notice in the same year that immigration is no longer only European, China and Iran arriving in second and third position.
