Historically, the Jura was the scene of several important events. During the French Revolution, the department was created in 1790. Then, in the 19th century, it became an important center of the Republican Resistance against the July Monarchy. The Jura department is also known for its role in resistance during the Second World War. 


The Jura department has a rich history, with many families established in the region for centuries. Its industrial heritage, in particular in the field of eyewear and diamond tailoring, has left traces in the genealogy of families in the region.

THE migrations depuis et vers le d0xTHE0partement du Jura ont 0xTHE0t0xTHE0 influenc0xTHE0es par des facteurs 0xTHE0conomiques, politiques et sociaux depuis des si0xTHE1cles : 

  • In the Middle Ages : groups of Burgundians (former people of Scandinavian origin) and Alamans (Confederation of German nations), settle in the region.

  • In the 16th century : Protestant reform leads to a migration of the Jura Protestants to neighboring Switzerland to escape religious persecutions.

  • In the 17th century : The wars of Louis XIV explain that soldiers and refugees flock to the Jura. 

  • In the 18th century : Poverty and the lack of cultivable land push the Jurassians to go to Switzerland and to the French colonies in North America. 

  • In the 19th century : l'industrialisation entraîne une migration importante vers plusieurs villes du Jura (comme Saint-Claude ou Morez) pour travailler dans les usines de lunetterie et de taillerie de diamants. Des ouvriers 0xTHE0trangers, ofs Italiens en particulier, sont recrut0xTHE0s. En parall0xTHE1le, ofs Jurassiens continues de migrer vers la Suisse ou les pays d'outre-mer. 

  • In the 20th century : The two world wars lead to population travel in the region. Refugees flock to the Jura to escape conflicts when others leave the department to join the armed forces. After the Second World War, the region experienced a significant period of economic growth which enabled immigration to foreign workers to settle (in particular Portuguese and Maghreb).
