The Côte d'Or is a French department located in the heart of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. Its name evokes the golden colors of the vineyards which adorns its hillsides, but the department extends far beyond, encompassing various landscapes ranging from the plains of the Saône to the foothills of the Morvan.

The department of the Côte d'Or was created in 1790 during the French Revolution from the former province of Burgundy. It is bordering on the departments of theYonne, from the Nièvre,  de Saône-et-Loire, of Jura,  de la Haute-Saône, from theDawn and Haute-Marne

Historically, the region played a crucial role from Antiquity. The vestiges of Alésia testify to the strategic importance of the territory in the Gallo-Roman era. In the Middle Ages, the Côte d'Or became the heart of the powerful Duchy of Burgundy, leaving a remarkable architectural and cultural heritage, notably in Dijon, its capital.

Geographically, the Côte d'Or is characterized by its diversity. To the east, the plain of the Saône contrasts with the hills of the Châtillonnais in the west, while the south is dominated by the famous wine coast. This topographic variety has influenced the implantation and the movements of the populations over the centuries.
