🧳 Les migrations dans la Hollow

  • In the Gallo-Roman era : The region is inhabited by the Lemovices, a Gallic people who left traces of their presence in cities like Guéret or Aubusson.

  • In the Middle Ages : The region is experiencing barbaric invasions and is the scene of many battles during the Hundred Years War. The region is marked by the presence of the Templars which have built castles and churches in the region.

  • From the 16th century : The region is experiencing a period of economic prosperity thanks to the production of tapestries in Aubusson, which will be exported worldwide. The Department of Hollow is experiencing an important rural migration at the cities, and even towards Paris during this same period.

  • In the 19th century : la région connaît une importante migration rurale vers les villes industrielles en développement comme Limoges et Paris. Les ouvriers agricoles quittent les campagnes pour travailler dans les usines textiles, THE mines de charbon et les chemins de fer.

We are talking about "Masons de la Hollow" to qualify this group of qualified workers from the department who have emigrated en masse to Paris and other French cities to work in the construction industry. They were masons, stone tailors, carpenters or building craftsmen and were recruited by entrepreneurs to work on large sites such as Haussmanian buildings, stations and public monuments. The life of the masons of the Hollow was not easy. They worked long hours in difficult and dangerous conditions and were often victims of exploitation and discrimination on the part of entrepreneurs and bosses.

  • After the World Wars : The department is experiencing a wave of immigration with workers from North Africa, Spain and Portugal to work in factories and farms.
