The Ain department is located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in eastern France. It was created during the French Revolution, in August 1793, from several provinces of the Old Regime - La Bresse, Le Bugey, Valromey and the Pays de Gex. 


The Department of Ain is now bordering on the departments of Jura, from the Haute-Savoy, from the Savoy, from theIsère, of Rhône and Saône-et-Loire.


💡  Good to know: Family names in the Ain department are often characteristic of the region. For example: Bressans family names often end with "-et" or "-at", while the family names of the Bugey often end with "-Az" or "-ex".

🧳 THE migrations dans l’Ain


The Ain department has not experienced impressive waves of migration. Here, however, a small overview of population movements in the department: 


- Pendant l'Antiquité : à l'époque gallo-romaine, la région était habitée par les Séquanes, les Eduens and Allobroges. THE Burgondes, peuple germanique, se sont aussi installés sur ce territoire. 


- In the Middle Ages: the region has experienced barbaric invasions, with the Huns, the Burgundians and the Franks. 


- In the 16th and 17th centuries: the wars of religion caused population movements, especially towards Protestant Switzerland. 


- Au XVIIIe siècle : la région connaît une importante migration de travailleurs saisonniers vers la Suisse, notamment dans les domaines de l'horlogerie and dentelle.


- Au XIXe siècle : une importante période de migration vers les villes industrielles de Lyon et Saint-Etienne, dans les domaines de la soierie and métallurgie, marque la région.
